ADVICE FOR NON CLASSICAL SINGERS

If you are a pop singer, musical theatre singer, or a young person looking for an agent or advice on how to start your singing career, this page is for you. If you are thinking of writing to me for advice, or help in finding an agent, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST.

This website and the Business of Singing workshop are designed specifically for classical singers. The classical singing industry is very, very different from the pop singing industry. I do not sing pop music and I know very little about the pop music industry. If you want to be the next Britney Spears, Charlotte Church, or American Idol winner, you need to look elsewhere for advice. Here are some sites to get you started:

SITES OF INTEREST TO POP OR BROADWAY SINGERS

The National Association of Teachers of Singing --- www.nats.org
Backstage – the magazine for musical theater and stage actors --- www.backstage.com
Great Voice – voiceover and presentation information --- www.greatvoice.com
Cabaret --- site for cabaret singers --- www.cabaret.org
Performing Arts Online --- various resources --- www.performingarts.net
The Singers’ Workshop --- LA based resource for pop singers --- www.thesingersworkshop.com
The Singing Spot --- lots of resources for singers of all genres --- www.thesingingspot.com

If you are still thinking about writing me to say that you are very talented and everyone you know says you should be a big star but you just don’t know how to get an agent, here is my very best advice for you. Don’t worry about getting an agent right now. Getting an agent comes much, much later. No matter how talented you are, your talent must be developed properly, over time, with a great deal of hard work and study. So stop worrying about getting an agent and get yourself a voice teacher. Learn to sing, even if you think you know how right now --- I guarantee there’s more to learn. Learn to dance. Learn to be a good musician (at the very least, learn how to read music). Learn to play an instrument. Learn to act. When you are good enough to interest a reputable agent, chances are they’ll come knocking on YOUR door.

And that’s about all the advice I have for the non-classical singer. Nothing against different genres of music; I simply don’t have the information you need. I wish you good luck.

Sincerely,

Cindy

PS: Please don't write me for advice unless it's about the classical singing industry.
